According to scientists, the Moon has been formed from a cumulus of debris, which was generated
from a crash between the young Earth and a planet with size of Mars called Theia.
The chemical composition of the planets in the solar system is slightly different and the experts
suggested that the lunar samples may contain chemical characteristics of the object, which crashed in the Earth.
The name of this object was given according to Greece Mythology where Theia is the mother of the Selena – Moon.
Team from Cologne University made an experiment for separating oxygen isotopes from other gases
to discover, that the lunar structure contains 50% of the Earth elements and 50% of another space object.
The team analyzed samples supplied by missions “Apollo 11,” “Apollo 12,” Apollo 16 “in 1969 and 1972.
This is the first team that finds differences in the oxygen isotopes. Other scientists working with
titanium, silicon, chromium, tungsten, but so far have not found significant differences between
lunar and terrestrial samples.
The results were published in the journal “Science.”
